This butterfly was found in the garden just a few days ago... There has been a frost since then and all the flowers are done for another year. I have been busy putting away garden decor and now I must harvest what seeds I can...

Back at B.S. F. and this last and eighth year for me is the study of Isaiah. I have also been busy with Church activites . I did a talk for stewardship last week and recited a poem I wrote, the congregation applauded... Oh my! Me and a couple of other gals are working on some new banners for the holidays and I am going to a leadership summit this weelend. I never seem to have enough time. I am also working on a couple of new paintings.

Me and my dear friend John during his wife's memorial last week. Robin died on Sunday the 20th and we will all miss her so. She was a joy to all that knew her and will be sorely missed. Robin was a fiber artist mastering in the art of inigo dying, a nurse and a naturalist. Although I have been friends with John for 40 years I only knew her for the last 15 but she and John were just made for each other. My heart really aches because my friend is without her.

This is a doll bed that my little neighbor Madelyn and I made for her doll. Its made from thick foamcore and scraps of fabric I had laying around. It was a wonderful afternoon that we spent together. Madelyn comes to paint with me sometimes and now several of her little friends want to join in. Looks like a tea party in the making.

Here I am on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean. My Daughter and I spent 2 weeks traveling to the east coast and to New York where I met my Blogger friend Debra at Sparrow grass. I forgot to take pictures of us together but did so enjoy meeting her family and of course her geese. Went to Niagara Falls and to Michigan to visit family too. I really need to do more traveling. There are some many great places to see. While visiting Debra we explored a place call Watkins Gorge where we walked up 800 stairs and saw 19 awesome waterfalls. Debra's so blessed to live near a place like that, all I have near me is corn and bean fields. Well I do have some pretty rivers and of course the great Mississippi river about an hour away. Any way there is so much to do in my own back yard... Like weeding and tending my gardens. I recently got a commission to do a painting for a neighbor and my grandson will be coming for a visit soon.

I think that this bridal wreath looks stunning right now. It's so great to see all the blooming things once again. I've been busy planting and sowing and finishing up with my seventh year at B.S.F thats Bible study fellowship. One more year to graduate, but I have the summer break coming up and am heading out next week on a road trip to the east coast with my daughter. I hope to visit with my blogger friend Debra at Sparrowgrass along the way. I have been busy with church activities as well . Take a look at the banners we made in rhe pictures below. I have joined curves snd am trying to get in shape again. It's hard when you're 62 years young because the old body just isn't what it used to be and I have been suffering with back problems. But I will perservere! The Spirit willing.

I have been working on a new painting of an old barn south of town. It's kinda bleak but thats winter in Iowa. Think I'll start working on something more spring like. Maybe I can hurry it along. Winter is nice but there's nothing like a warm spring breeze to lift your spirits.

I only wish this came out a little clearer but I hope it is enjoyed as a sample of my little snow village under my little tree. The image below is that of the snow Angel I did yesterday. Unfortunatly it is warming up out there and it probably won't last long. I have been wanting to make a snow Angel for years and have finally managed to do it. I felt like a kid again playing out there in winter wonderland... I hope to do more snow sculptures this year cause it feels good and its just plain fun!

I just got back from my vacation in Arizona where I enjoyed so many wonderful things from spa treatments to artist galleries and the scenery was awesome to say the least. I think I would like to go back out there as soon as possible where there is sunshine and something other to see than corn and bean fields. Although I loved being out there I missed my own surroundings and bed. If I could only make a home out there. My daughter treated me to this trip and I am grateful to her because it was indeed pricey. We also went to Las Vegas to see the Cirque de Solie . We saw Ka which was thrilling and had seats that were perfect. Saw Frank Lloyd Wrights Taliesin West and so now I have visited both of his schools, East and West. The red rocks of Sedona were amazing and we enjoyed a drive through the dessert in our rented convertible Mustang. I bought a book on painting with vibrant colors at a gallery in Sedona and am anxious to experiment with some new methods. All in all it's good to be home.

I have been working on this for a while now and hope to finish it soon because I am notorious for starting paintings and then I get an idea for a new one and somehow I end up with allot of unfinished work. Now that I am retired I hope to finish some older works sitting around. I guess I work better if I have a deadline and a time frame in which to accomplish something. I started back to B.S.F. a few weeks ago and have allot of homework to do, so that is my priority. Looks like I may have to put the garden to bed this weekend. It's supposed to snow Sunday. I am always sad to see summer end but
really do love the snowy landscape of winter. I hope to blog more often since winter seems more concussive to computer world. Happy Fall you all!

Tears of Joy

I have officially fininished the first piece of work in the new studio. This combination illustration and poem will be part of a traveling exhibition that the Presbytery of Eastern Iowa is having and they will auctiion off the works online next spring and give the proceeds to the flood victims here in Iowa. I am also working on a sunflower painting which I must get back to. I can feel the creative spirit starting to flow within me once again. This usually happens around my birthday which has just passed, somehow I get a resurgenge of energy this time every year. I start back to B.S.F. this Thursday and am looking forward to this semester as we are going to study John. This is to be my 7th. and final year as I will have completed the program an will graduate in May. My daughter bought me a charm braclet for my birthday that has a charm for each of the different studies made by a jeweler in Texas that has also completed the Study. I read that B.S.F. piloting a study of Isaiah and may be adding it to the cycle so I may get to have a bonus Study in the future..... The gardens are starting to look a little dry and I have been cutting down and pulling up. So the cycle goes on........

Well it's about time that I get blogging again as most of the projects around here are winding down. Actually I made a new list of things to do today but I would like to pause and enjoy the fruits of our labor before the end of summer. The new room is just about finished except for some minor details and the old barn has a new coat of red paint . I really can't wait to see it against the white snow of winter but not too soon. I miss my friends in the blogging world and think about you often. Now I really have to get to creating some art again. This month is my birthday and I have some celebrating to do also.

Just returned from a visit to my hometown and fortunatly was able to see the last showing at Peter Jones gallery which is closing after 25 years. This is a picture of Gwen Jones standing in front of some of her quilt works. I haven't seen Gwen for ages but it felt like yesterday that we were working on art projects together. I sent for a few of her mini quilts to hang in my new studio space for inspiration. I need to start working on an art project for the Presbytery of East Iowa which is based upon the bibilical story of Jesus and the "Woman at the Well" found in John 4:1-42. The show will be called Art as Living Water and will travel around the country next year. I have been formulating the peice in my head .Your prayers and inspiration will be appreciated. The windows for my studio should be in today and then the new art room can be completed . Hope it is finished soon as I must get to work on my art.Thank you all for your wonderful inspiration

As you can see the new room is coming along and soon I will be painting away!!! Not only will I paint the walls, there really isn't much there so I will soon be painting canvas and on old barn wood again. Thank you all my blogger friends for your inspiration. I hope to have a renewed season of creativity very shortly here.... Below pictures of my newly decorated computer room and dining room . Just had to throw in a picture of a few of the wonderful women in my group this year. I'll be missing them but will reunite in the fall to study John. I will have finished seven years in B.S.F. This is what my back porch was like before it was torn off today. It will soon be replaced by a 3 season porch where I can set up a nice sudio. I just can't wait. Below are a few pictures of the well that was discoverd. Too bad we had to fill it in because it was so nice, the workmanship amazing and to think that it's been here for almost a hundred years. I have missed blogging but I have been so busy with home improvement projects that I havn't had much time for anything else. All this work should be done by mid June and life can get back to normal.

I bought myself some tulips the other day because I just had to get a little spring going and the weather changed the next day . I think Old Man Winter took the hint. I hope you all are getting a hint of Spring wherever you are. I have Muscari blooming on the south side of the house and looks like the Daffodills aren't far behind. Yeah! Been cutting down vines and trimming trees and bushes. New fence to arrive next week so I have been clearing the way. I only hope they don't trample down all my spring flowers. This has been one busy winter around here so I am looking forward to the peaceful days of summer.

Just a reminder of those sweeter days when we were children and Easter was one of those really special Holidays when you got all dressed up and went to Church with the whole family..... I still go to church but without little ones around to share the joy it just isn't the same, though in the past few years I have found a deeper and more spiritual reason to celebrate in the resurection and the light.

I have missed blogging for awhile but I have been so busy around here. I just inherited this mirror and so I had to re-decorate my room. We are also repairing the ceiling in the computer/library room so the whole house is strewn with items from there. What a mess! I tore out an old bookshelf that was made from boards and have ordered new craftsman style bookcases and a matching computer desk. I am planning to paint the walls a color called Pawnee(kind of a burnt orange) and the ceiling Dakota Hills (golden tan). The ceiling has a way to go . After this room I move on to who knows where. My art work is on hold as I cant even get to my paints....Guess I'll settle for painting walls for now and enjoy looking at all of your creations.

She does some very amazing things with shells as well as other things like mosaics, stained glass, paintings and who knows what she'll come up with . I have been scanning photos for my family on facebook and came across this photo of my dog that I had when I lived in Door county wisconsin. He was the sweetest dog ever and has been gone now for quite some time and is in doggy heaven. I had to move back to Chicago for awhile and I felt sad for him since he was a country dog so I gave him to my friend Nila who lived in the woods, because he would be happier. There he lived his life out in a place more suitable to his nature. I will always miss him!

I recently got some new furnishing for the living room but now I am undecided about what color to paint the walls. I was thinking maybe a sage green or maybe a sand. The color thats on the wall now has been there for at least 15 years and I have grown tired of it even though it shows off the rich tones of the woodwork which is all original from 1912. Amazingly when I first painted them I noticed that there was only two coats of paint on them. Hard to belive , but then the original owner lived here till he died and there was only one other owner after him. If any of you out there have an idea for a color I would appreciate the input. The work on the house is on hold until the new door is delivered and the new fence which is vinyl, because it won't rot , can't be installed till spring. All in all it should be nice to have a fence thats not falling down. I have been working on a painting for my nephew and have to get another done for my grandaughter. I am not sure what I'll paint for her something with flowers I think. peace to you all... Laura

I Have been so busy around here just trying to keep my house in order what with all the work going on and dirt to keep a broom to. Washed my entire kitchen down from top to bottom and it looks so bright and clean. My new basement windows are installed , insulation in the attic and all the walls.The new front door is installed but has to be re-installed cause they sent one that opens on the wrong side. It was custom made and now I have to wait another eight weeks for the right one to be installed. Woe is me. I've been swimming two days a week and it really helps with the tension as I feel so relaxed afterwards. The painting is one I did way back in the "70's" Just been reminising about the past allot these days. Looking forward to spring and have the sping cleaning bug already. Peace be with you all.

Wow I actually managed to get a downloaded picture as I am rather computer illterate. I have a challanging day ahead as I prepare the living room for some new furniture and figure out how to dispose of the old piecies without too much effort. I would like to send one chair over to my church and the rest to a friends son. I hope the delivery guys will assist, otherwise I'll be stuck with a room full of furniture. A Long Winters Night

Once upon a midnight Dearie, I looked outside and saw this clearly. We were in a winter deep, and I couldn't get myself to sleep. So I took my camera out and shot this photo of the tree outside my door, the earth it seemed was frozen to the core. But I knew that there in stillness lay those little creatures of the day. Frozen in their earthly bed. almost seeming dead, they will wake someday and come out to play in this very flower bed. I soon grew weary of the night and sent myself to bed, and soon as I lay down I heard some noises in my head, but no they were not coming from inside of me but from inside my wall is where they be. It seems those little creatures of the night were having some kind of a fight. Thump, thump, bloop, bloop, bloop, it must have been some kind of troop, probably squirrels or maybe bats. I only hope they weren't rats.

I decided to post some of these photos of my collection. This started out as a couple of pixies that I bought at a garage sale about 25 years ago and the collection has grown to two cabinets full and overflowing. I bougt a LLadro Prince of the Elves and decided that I was finished collecting these wee little ones but who knows there might just be a pixie, elf, or fairy out there without a home and mine are such friendly little folk that they always welcome newcomers to their domain.

My Wonderful Journey

Clouds are mountains of the sky, they become the plain on which I walk.
As I step forward and look back, where mountains were, clouds were naught.
So forward and onward did I go, high and upward and descending low in my country of light and snow.
I stopped to rest on a rosy glow and gazed upon a great orange globe that was encompassed with a ring of solid gold suspended in a smelting pot of swirling hues, steams of turquoise and azure blues and lapis lazuli stairways too.
A dark grey cave emitting something like a violet ray tinged with gold like the wings of a giant butterfly.
All this and more did I find, on my journey in the sky,
My eyes such splendor did behold, but from my heart is where the story's told.
So I'll go down and tell some more, through the gates of heavens door.
I soon came upon the birds of wing, they came across in steady stream and disappeared through a deep blue tunnel and beyond.
I waved goodbye and journeyed on, to skate upon a silvery pond and gaze upon an ocean deeply green, to rest again upon a deep grey puff and wrap myself in pure white fluff.
As I did float in comfort sleepily, I saw such wonders, my eyes delight, from fairy creatures to ones of the height, mythical creatures made of pure light.
Soon I was woken by a swirl of wind, that threw me right from my floating plafond, and spun me around my face to the ground, and once more again I was earth bound!

These are three paintings recently finished and now hang in the Dutch Pet Motel in Crete Il. I had promised my son in law to do some dog paintings for him and delivered six of them to him on Thanksgiving. I have started a painting of my sister Jonis' dog Iggy but haven't gotten beyond the sketching stage yet. I'll be glad when this temp job ends as it cuts into my creativity. I made a New Years Resolution list today, actually for my church newsletter and used scripture as a point of reference. The first on the list goes like this. Exercise a little....For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come. 1 Timothy 4:8 . I think my fellow church members will enjoy this one.

A few winters ago this was the veiw on my way to work one mornimg and this was only a glimspe of what lay ahead. I hope this winter is a little mildersince I have to drive those awfull roads at night.
The trip to Chicago was uneventful and we missed the bad weather by a day. I did get that Chrysler Pacifica and enjoyed a very smooth ride all the way there and back.
Went out last night to celebrate my friend Arlenes birthday and have spent the day decorating the house for the Holidays and just kicking back. good day to nap!

I took this photo last year after an ice storm. It looks like a little chick nested in the wisteria. Winter isn't without its little delights! Sounds like I'm trying to psych myself up for the inevitable. Kevin and I test drove a couple of vechicles today. We really liked the Chrysler Pacifica, what a smooth ride. This morning we installed a new stained glass light fixture in the dinning room. I ordered it on line and of course it came with instuctions that were so vague we could have just thrown them away. Anyway it looks swell, after all our bitching, and it really warms up the place. I've been really busy these past few weeks with work and study. I hope to finish one more painting before Thanksgiving so I can bring them to My son in law for his kennel. I'm giving him them for a birthday gift and hope to when his customers see them they'll want to commision me to paint their dogs. Headed to Chicagoland next week forThanksgiving at my daughters . Hope you all have a good one.

Just last week this was the view outside and now the gold is gone and is replaced by the ever greying gloomy skies of winter. UGGGH! We have been busy around here getting some badly needed repairs scheduled , new basement windows and blown in insulation . Also on order a new front door . I think it might almost be ridiculous to have this work done now but that's how things work out here in the Galloway household. I had to do some patching on the front porch before it rotted any further. I only hope I'll have one more day warm enough to give it a coat of paint, otherwise it will have to do with just primer on it for the winter. I hope I can get it done before then but what will be,will be. I have actually been enjoying the days working at the store as I have been seeing allot of people I haven't seen for a while. I am working on another dog painting and of course spending a great deal of time in study. I'm looking forward to doing some good work this winter and also looking forward to spring!

Summers gone

This is where I'd like to be , just laying here and reading a good book or perhaps just admiring the flowers and birds that come to visit. It really was a wonderful summer with temperatures that were just right. Well unfortunately even though it's sunny today the wind's just a howling out there. I still have allot of work out there in the gardens but I haven't had the heart to cut it down yet. Perhaps after the first freeze I'll do it. The maple tree in the front yard looks beautiful all golden with contrasting bark, and the burning bush is turning bright red and the fall garden is striking indeed as the colors deepen to russets and purples. As much as I love the summer I really do enjoy the beauty of fall and think that today would be a good drive through the trees. See you later I'm on my way out the door to enjoy some scenery.

I have finished a couple of more paintings and am now working on another. I don't know how I will find enough time for all I want to do as I have committed myself to a temporary job working at a small gift shop in Iowa City that I used to work at. The owner called me and asked me to help out for the next couple of months as she gets ready to close the store. Just another sign of economic upheaval . Everyone's feeling the pinch these days and gifts are just one of those items that are not too high on the list of necessities. It's finally sunny today and I must get outside and do some yard work before the snow blows. Kevin and I went to the Golden age brunch at the church this morning. We were the youngest oldsters there but it was fun and the food was good. I put up a new stewardship poster in the narthax which turned out pretty well. I did a drawing of the image of Christ and filled the body with photos of eveyone in the congregation the caption reads... The Body Of Christ.

Summer Splender

I just long so for those sunny days of summer.It's kinda grey and gloomy today so I had to put out this sunflower photo for all to see. I made some chicken soup so that should keep the chill off. Been busy today writing a monthly article for the church newsletter and am about to work on a new dog painting that has alot of yellow in it so that should be cheerful. I finished a chihuahua painting which turned out pretty well and a small one of Blizzard, a dog I used to have when I lived in Door county Wisconsin. Hope your day is sunnyside up!

The Artist's Touch

A restless and empty canvas
nervously awaits the artist's brush
Along with palette productive of
creation's initial blush.
Oils of varied tints and hues anxiously
expectant of proud display,
Yet only when a spark of genius
surpasses uncertain way.
Act, scene, agent, agency, and purpose
set forth in Burke's Pentad
Does lend to art from rhetoric a means
that should make the heart glad.
The view might inquire what was done,
and when and where it was done,
And by whom, why, and how it was done,
so lauded be creation.
But, the seed of inspiration must impregnate
the artist's soul
Until disassembled imagery blends
together as a whole,
So that life is breathed upon the canvas
by the artist's steady stroke,
Til the ultimate outcome represents
the standards he would invoke.
There would be countless lesser-knowns carving
their niche sans pomp and heraldry
Yet their portraits hand for all to see
on the hallways of eternity!

Can you belive that such a small creature can accomplish such a great feat in a just a small amount of time. It makes me wonder what might be possible for me to accomplish in a lifetime. I think we could all learn something from this little spider.

This is a rendering of of a painting by Edgar Yaegar that I copied from a photo. He was an artist from Detroit . There is a cool website of his work out there. my newphew now owns the original. my husband liked the painting so I made a copy for him.
